The COOLPIX S6000 is the thinnest camera in its class despite a zoom lens that covers a broad focal range from wide-angle 30mm through super-telephoto 300mm (both 35mm format equivalent). This slim body was made possible with a new lens structure developed to reduce the length of the lens at the maximum telephoto position, a sliding mechanism that helps reduce body thickness when lens is retracted, and a lens-barrier structure that enables a lens barrel with a smaller diameter.

A new structure that integrates the acrylic protection panel and LCD panel below it by eliminating the layer of air between the two has been adopted.
